What To Do In A Dental Emergency

ToothacheĀ ā€“ The first step is to contact us as soon as possible for evaluation and treatment ā€“ Do not put off addressing the problem, as a toothache canĀ worsen to a serious infection and/or swelling. Use an over the counter medicationĀ like Ibuprofen, Tylenol (Acetaminophen), or Aspirin as recommended.Ā Do not apply painkillers directly to the gums or aching tooth as they may cause irritation to the gum tissue.Ā Try gently flossing to remove any lodged food or rinsing your mouth with warm water. If there is swelling, a cold compress may be applied to the outside of the mouth or cheek.

Knocked out toothĀ ā€“ Whenever possible, find the tooth and bring it with you ā€“ it will helpĀ to evaluate the situation and determine treatment (If you cannot find the tooth, be sure to tell the dentist this, too). Be careful to hold the tooth by the crown (the part that is usually exposed in the mouth). Place the tooth in cold milk or sterile saline (do not use tap water if possible).Ā Avoid any cleaning orĀ rinsing of the tooth. Contact our office immediately, as knocked out teeth have the highest survival rate if they are returned to the socket within one hour of being knocked out. If you are unable to get to the office within an hour, attempt to re-plant the tooth yourself and contact our office.

Broken Tooth or Lost Filling or Dental CrownĀ ā€“ Do not attempt to use glue to replace your filling or dental crown. In some situations, a crown can be temporarily re-inserted at home with toothpaste or other over-the-counter temporary dental cement until you can get to the dental office. Contact us as soon as possible for evaluation and treatment. You may take a pain reliever such as Ibuprofen, Tylenol (Acetaminophen), or Aspirin to help ease discomfort.

AbscessĀ ā€“ An abscess is a serious conditions that can spread infection to the rest of your body if left untreated. Call us immediately for evaluation and treatment. To ease discomfort, you may rinse with warm salt water and use Ibuprofen, Tylenol, (Acetaminophen), or Aspirin as directed.

  • Our front staff will welcome you with typical information gathering and answering any dental care questions you may have.
  • Next, your dental hygienist will greet you in the waiting room.
  • If dental X-rays or photos are required, they will be taken to understand the overall health of your mouth and accurately diagnose any dental issue.
  • Then your dental hygienist will perform a teeth cleaning, polish, floss, and fluoride.
  • Next, we will take a periodontal chart to write and record gingival and overall oral conditions relating to oral and periodontal (gum) health.
  • Meet the doctor for an exam and discuss any areas of concern you may have or we may want to address.
  • If any areas of concern are found, we consult with your insurance company to provide an estimate of costs. If you do not have dental insurance at the time, you can use our third-party payment provider CareCredit to pay for the care you need.

frequently asked questions

Many oral health concerns can only be detected through a thorough examination by a trained dentist. Dental checkups provide oral cancer screenings, digital X-rays to check for hidden issues, and professional cleanings to eliminate plaque, bacteria, and other buildups that daily brushing and flossing wonā€™t effectively eliminate.

Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss, so early intervention is essential. Once gum disease has taken its toll on the tooth and supporting bone, it cannot be restored, but only managed or replaced. The dental hygienist will use a small ruler to gently measure the gum ā€œpocketā€ around each of your teeth, making note of areas that you canā€™t clean with a toothbrush or floss. X-rays are used in conjunction with these measurements, to identify areas of bone recession.
